I learned a great deal in the process of reviewing Explorers’ memoirs–just as much as students did when writing them!  I regrettably held onto students’ writing for a long time, as I hoped to give them the kind of focused attention that I had shared with my classmates during past creative writing workshops in my undergraduate and post-undergraduate career.  As a result, I encourage students to revise their memoirs further during Trimester 1 in order to simulate the process that amateur and professional writers go through.  Since all students satisfactorily completed the memoir assignment, their grades reflect this accomplishment.  However, additional refinement of drafts in response to teacher feedback can result in an updated grade.  Students who wish to make revisions should let me know so they can check their memoir out of their class file.

Legacy/Explorers Reading Blocks 3 and 4: Students will complete a one page reflection on Alan Paton’s world view in Cry, the Beloved Country.  This assignment is designed to help students consider whether the author believes in a hopeful view of the future of the world at large or a hopeless one.  Reflection on this question will then lead to students’ own creative writing later in the week.  Students had fifteen minutes in Monday’s class to work on this assignment.
